In a land of six seasons there is some fruit or other almost all year round. Fruit in season ripens fully on the tree, so it tastes better and costs less. The list below is a rough guide: depending on the region and the weather, things come a little earlier or later.
Summer (Boishakh-Jyoishtho, April-June)
- Mango, jackfruit, litchi, black plum (jam), watermelon, muskmelon (bangi)
- Jyoishtho is called the honey month (modhumash): more fruit arrives now than at any other time.
Monsoon (Asharh-Srabon, June-August)
- Pineapple, guava, hog plum (amra), latkan, wax apple (jamrul), the last of the mangoes
Autumn (Bhadro-Ashwin, August-October)
- Palmyra (tal), olive (jolpai), pomelo (batabi lebu), star fruit (kamranga)
Late autumn and winter (Kartik-Magh, October-February)
- Orange, Indian gooseberry (amloki), olive, and jujube (kul) as winter ends
- Date palm juice and jaggery are the special treats of winter.
Spring (Falgun-Choitro, February-April)
- Jujube (kul), tamarind, wood apple (bel), green mangoes for pickling
All year
- Banana, papaya, coconut, green coconut (dab)
